IBM's 2008 Global CEO Study: The Enterprise of the Future
According to the 2008 Global CEO Study, the future of organisations are characterised by accelerating and uncertain change. CEOs that participated in this study are EMBRACING this change rather than resisting it.
IBM spoke to over 1,000 CEOs from 40 different countries and from 32 different industries. 19 per cent of these companies employ more than 50,000 people and 22 per cent have less than 1,000 employees. Central to all CEOs concerns were the issues that separate organisational success from failure.
CEOs are working closely with Chief Information Officers (CIOs) to ensure that both their IT and management teams are moving towards the Enterprise of the Future. CIOs are being challenged as masters of change, requiring flexible and scalable technology systems and infrastructures that drive change throughout the organisation.
In order to fulfil the CEOs agenda to become an Enterprise of the Future, CIOs will be newly challenged to match the increasing pace of high-level change expected from them. To reach new markets and get closer to customers, CIOs need to turn information into business insight. CIOs need to empower customers by giving them secure access to relevant information. They need to be innovative and serve highly-informed, global customers, absorbing the pressure to do more, faster and with less.
IT and Business need to work together like never before to provide compelling insight for the Enterprise of the Future. The results of the study conclude that the underlying theme is change. CIOs will be change catalysts for their organisations, working closely with their IT team and the CEO.
Five key traits apparent to CEOs and business leaders regarding an Enterprise of the Future, were ensuring that their organisation was:
- “Hungry for change:embracing the fast, broad, uncertain
changes that lie ahead;
- Innovative beyond customer imagination: leveraging growing
customer demands as an opportunity for differentiation;
- Globally integrated: becoming outperformers by embracing
global integration;
- Disruptive by nature:innovating business models to stay ahead
of the competition;
- Genuine, not just generous: growing the business by being
more socially responsible.”
