Teamworks have been developing large scale, customised Leadership development programmes since 1991. We have designed programmes for MSD, Land Transport NZ, NZ Police, SPARC and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. An estimated guess would put the total number of participants at over 1000. We have 5 senior consultants who are capable of programme design. In all cases, we have worked collaboratively with in-house staff to develop a final design unique to the organisation. We have a track record of highly successful programmes that have been measured in behaviour change both individually as well as organisationally.
These three modules were selected based on research conducted with WINZ managers across all (then) thirteen regions. The research identified six broad clusters and the three most urgent were selected for further development. Each one of the modules was designed within an overall framework covering thirteen phases.
The programme learning outcomes and overview of the programme were written in a number of ways for specific target populations. They were finally detailed in the 2003 workbooks along with an overview statement. There was also an overview of the total programme along with a clear rationale for the programme produced as an internal communication document for Business units and Regions that were initially reluctant to engage in the programme.
The workshops and supporting facilitators’ guides are still being used in the MSD Leadership Development Programme by a variety of contracted facilitators.
SPARC
Sport and Recreation New Zealand is the body responsible for co-ordinating the various sports and recreation organisations in New Zealand. Teamworks has been developing the leadership capability of various CEOs across the sector, including a suite of workshops and individual coaching and support. The programme is being evaluated and updated on a regular basis using a variety of evaluative tools. As a result of the success of the programme first two years it has been decided to extend this programme to a third year involving an additional 14 CEOs from across the sector. This will bring the total to 43 CEO’s. Teamworks is continuing to provide the ongoing facilitation.
Work with the NZ police began in 2004 involving a pilot programme within the Wellington District. The focus of the programme is leadership development with the senior management team. The programme involves individual assessment using 360 degree feedback and one-on-one coaching sessions as well as 5 2-day facilitated workshops focused on leadership practises. A 360 degree instrument is provided. Each workshop is evaluated by an internal audit process and feedback is discussed between Teamworks, the HR advisor and the District Commander after each session. As this is a work in progress all results are confidential. A key to working with this project has been conducting an in-depth analysis into the police culture in order to become accepted as a useful outside agent for change. We are now working on a senior sergeant’s leadership programme that will eventually be delivered in all districts throughout New Zealand. The programme has also been introduced into Police National Head Quarters. Teamworks was instrumental in developing People Capability with the New Zealand Police, which led to them winning the State Services Commission Award for Excellence in People Capability. The award was for the Development and Implementation of the New Zealand Police Leadership and Management Development Framework.
Transport Nelson Limited (TNL)
Teamworks first became involved with TNL during a time of recovery in the company’s business profitability (1995). It was identified through a senior management strategy workshop that leadership development was a key issue to the future growth of the company. A programme was set up and has been in force since that time with training sessions taking place each year as well as ongoing work with the senior leadership team. In the autumn of 2004 it was further identified that for future development of the company an Emerging Leaders Programme needed to be established. The first intake to the programme happened in January 2005 involving 30 potential future leaders in the company. The programme is to run for three years with a combination of training events, stretch assignments, on-the-job coaching and individual assessments involving emotional intelligence, stress profiles, psychological profiles and aptitude measures. In addition there will be yearly 360 degree profiles. Teamworks is the sole provider of service to this programme involving specialist providers as needed.
We have designed and developed a Leadership Programme which has 360 degree instrument, linked to the Lominger Competencies. The programme is now in its third year and has been highly rated by all participants. Over 130 managers have taken part so far. Land Transport New Zealand was the other finalist in the State Services Commission Award for Excellence in People Capability, this time with the help from Teamworks using the Fostering Leader's Strategy.
Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB)
Teamworks began working with the NMDHB in 2004 introducing a Team and Leadership Development Programme for managers. This initiative involved consultation, research and development of a programme that fit into the Health Sector. Participant reviews to date have been positive. The programme is now in the second phase of development, which will include change management for senior leadership teams.
